As an entertainer, often I perform at outdoor Summer events. Not only that, but I also love going to outdoor festivals to enjoy music, food and the many Summery imbibements.
Staying hydrated is number one on my list of things I have to do in order to be able to enjoy myself and the hot Summer days. Even Henry David Thoreau had said “I believe that water is the only drink for a wise man.”
Hydrate Kids:
Last Summer as I created balloon animals for children, the line grew long and children ended up waiting a considerable amount of time for their balloons. As one little girl was finally about to receive her sculpture, she looked up, her eyes rolled back and she collapsed on me. Paramedics quickly arrived (her parents had left her to wait in the line while they did other things) and revived her with damp cloths and water.
Hydrate Yourself:
In addition to drinking plenty of water, I’m also careful to (try to) avoid caffeine and alcohol, as these can be dehydrating. If I partake, as I do have a fondness for the grape in particular, I’m sure to drink plenty of water to go along with it. Afterall, as my old friend Ben Franklin said, “Take counsel in wine, but resolve afterwards in water.”
Nowadays, drinking water is a popular thing to do. Nearly everyone totes around their own bottle. Quick! Where’s your water? Yep, I thought you’d know where it was. In fact, sometimes I get a little freaked out if water isn’t nearby. “I never drink water. I’m afraid it will become habit-forming.” said W.C. Fields and, boy, he didn’t know the half of it.
Other things I do to stay cool with water are:
Soaking a bandana and wearing it around or behind my neck.
Wetting just the sleeves of my T-shirt with water.
Soaking another bandana and wearing it under a brimmed airy hat.
Summer is too fantastic to not enjoy.
Be hydrated. Be UNPOPPABLE!
