Last minute client request: one of two whimsical #balloonart columns

Recently, I was asked to create some fun balloon decor for the client’s adult Staff event with the theme “Escape Adulthood”.

I had less than 24 hours before the event was to begin.

That means since I already had other engagements within that 24 hour period, not to mention possibly eating and sleeping, I had very little time to consult and create a design, let alone deliver and install it.

I can nod my head in thanks towards many factors that enable me to fulfill last minute client requests. Namely, however, my years of experience is key.

I have been down the Last Minute road numerous times before and have created enough designs of my own to always have a sufficient arsenal of ideas ever simmering just below the surface ready to emerge.

In addition, my experience has taught me that having a grasp of the two sisters, scheduling and prioritizing, is tantamount to having any design skills or business acumen.

Finally, my years of experience has taught me that building relationships is imperative if I want to develop new clients. The client that called on me had never used my services before, but knew me through other various networking events and social media.

Sometimes there’s only the School of Life (or Hard Knocks, as some of my friends call it,) that can prepare us for the unexpected.

Other times there are certain things we need to learn and can by taking a class or educating ourselves more somehow, whether they are related to our character development or skill development, or both.

Are there character traits, skills or resources you need to develop in order to successfully handle last minute requests?
